Maxim Lando releases Three Dances from Frankenstein performance Video

June 25, 2024

2020 Gilmore Young Artist, Maxim Lando, has released a video of his performance of Three Dances from Frankenstein, Op. 140, filmed on location at the Church of the Intercession, as part of the 2023 world premiere presentation by Death of Classical’s Crypt Sessions.

Composed by Lowell Liebermann and commissioned by Maxim Lando with assistance from The Gilmore, the piece is based on Lieberman’s acclaimed ballet Frankenstein. The video was filmed by Skillman Music.

Lando says the dramatic and beautiful work was “one of the hardest pieces I’ve ever played, and at the same time one of the most rewarding. It immediately captures the emotions of loneliness, loss, love, misunderstanding, and the grotesque.”

“My idea was to make a live performance video of Three Dances from Frankenstein Opl in a visually appealing, and hopefully somewhat creepy setting. I was thrilled when Andrew Ousley from Death of Classical offered the possibility of filming at the Crypt underneath the Church of Intercession in Harlem.

“I am tremendously grateful to The Gilmore for awarding me the funds to commission this extraordinary new work, to Young Concert Artists for supporting both financially and creatively the idea of filming this project, to Skillman Music for recording and video artistry, and to Death of Classical for giving me a spectacular location in which to film this project. Most of all, I am thankful to Lowell for creating this music.”

Last heard at The Gilmore in 2023, Lando was first prize winner in both the 2022 New York Franz Liszt International Competition and The Vendome Prize 2021/22. This season, Lando has or will perform at the Caramoor, Dresden, and Oyster Bay music festivals; and with the Omega Ensemble, Kennett Symphony, Czech National Symphony Orchestra Charleston Symphony, Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players Chamber Music Detroit and Mobile Symphony Orchestra.
